Crate training your dog/puppy is a necessary foundational training. It also enables you to successfully transport your dog/puppy in a car or airline crate. When you first introduce a new or different crate or carrier to your dog/puppy, leave the crate door open. Put some treats in there so they experience a reward for exploring.
Make sure your dog/puppy has had a break before closing the door. One goal to strive for is that you wait until they are seated on their belly (and quiet) before opening up the crate door. If they wine or bark while in the crate, please be silent. Once settled and quiet, open up the crate door. This way you are training them that crate time is quiet chill time. Also they have to follow expected manners and commands for the crate door to open.
For safety while they are in the crate, only have steel water/food bowls and a Nylabone. A Nylabone is a chew safe bone. They come in all flavors, shapes and sizes. Make sure the crate is free of any object or anything they could possible chew on. Also usually inside the crate is *no collars/no leashes so they do not get caught on anything. Inside the crate has to be a chew safe/choke safe environment(ie collars off).
