How to make your dog love bath night

We once brought an older German Shepherd home from the rescue, and tried to clean him up in the bathtub. He jumped up and sprung back, refusing to get in the tub. When we picked him up and put him in the tub, he bounced out half wet and half dry- still needing a bath. He hated baths, and refused to be lathered and cleaned in a bathtub. On bath night, our dog would turn into a bucking bronco horse!

But, you could brush him. And brushing is where we begin as we turn dogs who hate bath night into dogs that love it!

What do I do if my dog won’t go in the bathtub? How can I ever get my dog cleaned up?

If you have a dog that refuses to get in the bathtub for clean up, here is how to begin the process until you are successful. Most dogs love to be brushed, so start there. Get a dog bath massage brush, and dry brush you dog with it. He will love being massaged with this Bath Brush. This is the start of great things! This is what dog massage Bath Brushes looks like.

Once you have had the experience of dry brushing your dog with the bath brush, dip it in water to see if he will tolerate the same massage brushing but with a wet dog massage brush. You can at that point try waterless foam dog shampoo with the dog massage bath brushing. And you can even try using leave in dog conditioner with the dog massage bath brushing.

You can shop for waterless dog shampoos, leave in dog conditioners, and grooming brushes here: Grooming Kits and Supplies.

If your dog has a lot of dusty dirt or mud, you are going to need to try air grooming with the dog air groomer. This is what The Flying Pig Dog Air Groomer looks like!

It has a muffler in it so as not to hurt your dog’s sensitive ears. So dogs tend to enjoy the air grooming, and stand by while they are getting the air massage! The reason dogs don’t like human hair dryers is that they have no sound muffler. So they make a high pitched sound that is uncomfortable to the dogs ears.

So outfit yourself with a Flying Pig Dog Air Groomer because it has a muffler! Therefore it doesn’t hurt your dog’s ears. Most dogs become so comfortable with it that they will stand by and wait to be groomed with it!

The Flying Pig Dog Air Groomer can be used on dry or wet dogs. It will remove; loose hair, dander, dirt, and mud. It helps keep their skin clean and free of irritating allergens. Also five minutes of this a day will reduce shedding inside the home. So dog air grooming can be done pro-actively to keep your dog and home clean, and free of shedding dog hair.

You can also clean a wet muddy dog without any shampoo or rinse! Just put on the wet dog attachment or the regular attachment and dry groom off the mud. It will both remove mud/dirt and dry your dog in one session! The only maintenance on the air groomer is to clean/change the filter and remove hair from the air intake vents. The dryer comes with a book that showcases all this, and explains how to change it’s filter. It’s as easy as changing a bag on a vacuum!

Once your dog will tolerate wet brushing with the dog bath massage brush, you can try to add in a lather with suds! Success will look like this! Now you are actually shampooing your dog with the wet dog massage bath brush!

Add Dog Shampoo and massage your dog with the bath brush!

Once you are able to dry brush, wet brush and lather your dog with shampoo……you are ready for the rinse! If your dog is not totally comfortable with getting rinsed off, start using a large, water soaked soft sponge to rinse off the suds. A large car wash type sponge holds enough water to hand rinse off the suds.

If you need to find a large sponge to hand rinse your dog off, click here: Shop Large Sponges.

Once your dog is accepting of wet brushing, shampoo lather and sponging off rinses, you can see if they will accept gentle rinses with the garden hose. You can also find dog friendly garden hose attachments to use. Click here to shop: dog wash garden hose attachments.

If you need warm water to rinse your dog with, you can get a cordless, portable water machine. It is powered by a rechargeable ion battery. You can fill the tank with warm water. The cordless water machine has a special pet wash attachment that makes the water stream flow out like a rain shower! The cordless, portable water machine looks like this.

You can also set this water machine inside a Gorilla wagon card to move it wherever you need it. The Gorilla wagon looks like this.

You can shop for a cordless, portable water machine here: portable water machine.

After all this how do I then get my dog to accept baths in a bath tub in my house?

Once your dog accepts all of these grooming routines, it’s now time to condition them to like the bath tub. You will need to get a dog treat licking mat and attach it to the side wall of the tub. Put some canned dog food on it, and allow your dog to go in the tub just to lick the canned dog food off the treat mat! It looks like this.

You can shop for dog treat mats that will stick to the tub wall here: Aquapaw Treat Mat. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Once your dog is easy going in and out of the tub for treat mat treats, try the same set up but have a few inches of water in the tub. Then at some point try wet bath brushing your dog while he is in the tub licking treats off the treat mat. At some point you will be able to wet brush, lather and rinse your dog in the tub while he is licking treats off the treat mat!

So if at any time your dog regresses, just go back and do the same steps again. This will bring him back to the success arena with bath night!
